New database for all dogs and cats

New database for all dogs and cats

From 1 July 2018 there will be one central database capturing all microchipped and registered dogs and cats, breeders and registration payments in South Australia.

Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) is a new online service that will be used for all registration payments, microchipping and breeder information.  DACO will be replacing the 68 individual council registers and will assist councils, shelters and the general public in reuniting lost pets with their owners.

“The new online system will simplify dog registration and make it easier to reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners, help identify and put a stop to puppy farms and reduce euthanasia rates in the long term” said Jamie Tann Council’s Public Safety Manager.

“It will act as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for registration details, microchip and breeder information for each pet that can be accessed 24 hours, 7 days a week.”

“It will also be a great online resource to process dog attacks and help track dogs at large. Overall increasing the chance of reuniting a lost cat or dog with its owner” added Mr Tann.

As of 1 July 2018, the following information is applicable for all dog and cat owners, breeders in South Australia:

  • All registrations and renewals will go online
  • Micro-chipping of dogs and cats will be compulsory
  • De-sexing will be compulsory for all dogs and cats born after this date
  • Anyone who breeds or sells a dog or cat must register with the Dog and Cat Management Board as a breeder
