Community Main

Councils must raise revenue for governance and administration, which deliver goods and services to the community. These goods and services are generally not provided by the private sector and may include road infrastructure, waste management, social services, libraries, regulatory services, health services and street lighting to mention a few.

Rates are a system of taxation on the community for local government to deliver the goods and services expected by the community. All ratepayers receive benefits from paying rates, but those benefits are consumed in different quantities and types over the lives of the ratepayer.
