Developing the Plan

September 2014

The District Council of Mount Barker has recently commenced development of a Stormwater Management Plan for Mount Barker, Totness and Littlehampton.  This Plan, which is being prepared in partnership with the SA Murray Darling Basin NRM Board and Department for Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), will be prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Stormwater Management Authority (a State Government statutory authority) such that it will become an approved document with State Government support that defines future stormwater management strategies for the area.  Further, the finalised Plan will also inform future Development Plan Amendments in the area with regard to key measures identified for managing stormwater matters.

SMP Study Area(349 kb)

The Plan will consider a broad range of stormwater management objectives including:

  • Reduction of flood risk
  • Improvement of stormwater quality discharged to the receiving environment
  • Protection of existing natural watercourses from erosion and amenity / biodiversity loss
  • Making beneficial use of stormwater through harvesting and reuse
  • Development of sustainable infrastructure with affordable whole of life costs

The current Development Plan provides for a range of outcomes with regard to flood management, stormwater runoff quality and quantity and flow rate management. Further, the Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne Strategic Infrastructure Plan (DPTI, 2014) describes indicative stormwater infrastructure needs in the growth area.  The full document can be viewed at http://www.dcmtbarker.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=752&c=19995

Critically, the development of the Stormwater Management Plan will identify and prioritise strategies and requirements for the management of stormwater associated with the potential future development of the residential urban growth areas surrounding the existing Mount Barker township.

Property owners are encouraged to engage with Council on the development of the Stormwater Management Plan by making contact with Council’s Capital Program Manager, Matthew Dawkins via telephone 8391 7281 (direct) or email mdawkins@mountbarker.sa.gov.au
