Food Waste & Kitchen Caddies FAQs

The property owner will need to complete a new kerbside waste, recycling and green organics service online form. This application includes an option to request a kitchen caddy, if ticked yes, one will be delivered with your blue and yellow bins at no extra cost.

Residents located in townships are entitled to a green organics service, in addition to the approved Kersbide waste and recycling services. The resident is responsible for the provision and maintenance of a suitable dark green body and lidded 240 litre mobile bin.

Studies have shown that the disposal of food scraps within compostable bags into the green organics bin does not have a significant impact on the smell of the bin. If you are having issues with the smells, you can freeze seafood and meat until the day of collection and always ensure you place your bin out each fortnight, even if it is not full.

Properties are entitled to one free kitchen caddy bin. If you require an additional kitchen caddy, a similar product can be sourced from your local hardware store.

Most retailers including supermarkets, hardware stores and other retailers in the district have now introduced good ranges of compostable bags for sale at low cost that fit the kitchen caddy’s and can be disposed of to green waste.

No, only one kitchen caddy will be supplied per each property assessment.

Absolutely not. It is very important that plastic bags are not used in your kitchen caddy and placed in your green organics bin. Plastic bags, including degradable and biodegradable bags, contaminate the organics as they do not break down during the composting process. Only use compostable bags labelled ‘Compostable AS 4736’ or newspaper to wrap food waste or place it directly in with your food and garden waste.

Food scraps placed into the green organic waste bin, whether loose or within a compostable bag, will be composted along with your green garden materials.

If you are in a residential house within a township and would like a green organics bin, you can purchase one directly from SOLO by contacting them on 8295 5077 or from your local hardware stores. Please remember that bins need to be 240 litres and dark green in colour.

Alternatively, you can use your kitchen caddy to transport your food scraps to your home compost, or chickens.

It is not recommended to place the compostable bag into your home compost because it may not break down at the same rate as the green waste that is commercially composted.
