Alexandrina Road Reconstruction - Stage 2
27 March 2015
All works are now complete with only minor site tidy up remaining. The contractor has indicated that they will vacate the site by 2 April, well ahead of the expected completion date.
The project has provided a number of benefits including improved capacity at the intersection to reduce queuing, a right turn and left turn lane out of Secker Road, footpaths, improved lighting and landscaping.
16 March 2015
Last week saw the installation of the new road surface for Alexandrina Road and Secker Road. The Oborn Road west section will be asphalted during day works this week.
Remaining works include installation of public lighting on the north west and north east corners of Secker Road, footpath and line marking. Minimal disruption to traffic is expected while these activities are completed.
Night works 10 - 13 March
The contractor is progressing ahead of schedule with all concrete works expected to be complete by Friday 6 March.
Council is pleased to advise that a review of an aspect of the road construction detail has been completed and an alternate methodology will be substituted to shift what could be 1-2 weeks of further day work into a shorter period of work at night.
Night works will commence Tuesday 10 March to Friday 13 March inclusive between 6pm and 6am to construct the road base and lay asphalt. This is subject to suitable weather conditions. The roads will remain open during this time, although there may be periods where traffic will be halted for a short time to accommodate construction vehicles.
Once the road is constructed, day works will resume to install footpaths, lighting, linemarking, signage etc to complete the project.
Installation of all the drainage pipes will be complete by the weekending 6 February which is well ahead of the works program. The next stage includes electrical trenching and preparations for new kerbing on the northern side of Alexandrina Road from Secker Road to meet where Stage 1 finished and then move to the southern side of Alexandrina Road.
Trenching across Secker Road intersection for electrical conduits for street lighting will also be undertaken and this is expected to be undertaken commencing 5 February. Traffic will be managed by stop go traffic controllers while this is underway to maintain two way flow.
The bus stop in the work zone has been removed while the works are underway with passengers advised to proceed to the next bus stop along Alexandrina Road, west of the roundabout.
Night Works 27 - 29 January
Night works to install stormwater drainage will be undertaken next week:
- Tuesday 27 January
- Wednesday 28 January
- Thursday 29 January
Work will commence at 6.30pm and conclude at 7.30am on each of these days. The Alexandrina Road and Secker Road will remain open to vehicles during the night works but restricted to one lane under traffic management.
It is proposed that no work will be undertaken in the day time allowing the roads to be open to two way traffic. Day works will recommence on Monday 2 February.
Works underway December 2014 to June 2015
The contract for the construction of Stage 2 of the Alexandrina Road re-construction from the western end of Stage 1 through to just west of Secker Road has been awarded to Beltrame Civil Pty Ltd.
Preliminary works to relocate services such as Telstra, SA Power Networks and SA Water have commenced with the road reconstruction to begin in January 2015. Completion is expected by June 2015, subject to weather and any unforeseen circumstances.
The construction will comprise upgrades to the intersections of Secker Road and Oborn Road, road widening and reconstruction of the road pavement, footpath construction, public lighting upgrades at intersections and improvements to stormwater drainage. Council will be working closely with the contractor to ensure traffic management is well considered and that delays are minimised as much as possible. Night works will be undertaken for key elements of the project.
The project will improve safety, access, and upgrade the road to deliver an appropriate level of service for all road users.
The cost of Stage 2 is $1.4 million for which Council has secured grant funding of $1.0 million from the Special Local Roads Program.
