Flaxley Road Safety Upgrade
28 August 2014
The initial interim works have been completed to improve safety for buses and access for students. Monitoring will now be undertaken to review the effectiveness of the works and determine if any extension of bus bay widening is required.
Council is continuing to prepare surveys and design for a permanent solution while awaiting commitment from the State Government to contribute to the project.
Works have commenced to widen the area for buses to pull off at Mount Barker High School. Rubble will be placed for the footpath progressively over the coming weeks.
These works are being undertaken as an urgent interim measure while a response is awaited from the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure seeking commitment from the State Government to contribute to the overall Flaxley Road Safety Upgrade Project.
In order to address student safety issues, Mount Barker High School has requested a sealed bus layby and footpath from the bus drop-off area to the school entrance along Flaxley Road.
Flaxley Road is a State Government Road and Council has advocated and liaised with the Department for Planning, Transport & Infrastructure (DPTI) to identify a satisfactory solution.
Council is proposing to fund 50% of the project cost through the footpath program in its 2014/15 budget. This is dependent on DPTI committing funding to the project.
