The section of Waterford Avenue, Mount Barker between Claret Ash Drive and Atlantic Road has been closed temporarily due to road pavement materials becoming saturated.
This has resulted in severe decline of the pavement strength and accelerated fatigue of the road surface.
Council has inspected the road on numerous occasions and sought professional Engineering advice to determine the most suitable course of action. In brief, until the moisture content is lowered by drainage measures, any and all traffic may extend the extent of failure and cause further significant damage to the road.
Council now intends to engage a suitably qualified contractor to undertake the necessary drainage and pavement rehabilitation works as soon as possible. These works will occur along the western and eastern side verges of the road. Council will continue to maintain the partial road closure until such time as the pavement strength has been restored to a suitable standard. Council may deploy steel plates over the road as an interim measure to expedite the road opening.
