Background

Identified in Asset Renewal Plans.

March 2024

This project has now reached Practical Completion.

The works included targeted guard fence, localised road widening, drainage upgrades, improved road and corner delineation, new signage and road markings.

February 2024

Works continuing, including embankment stabilisation, new guardrail and tree trimming.

January 2024

Asphalt including shoulder sealing and pavement renewal is now underway!

December 2023

Road widening is underway at selected accident locations along Old Mount Barker Road, predominantly around the bends and will be completed prior to the holiday period.

The works will be kept under a 60kph limit over Christmas for safety reasons until all works are complete.

Guardrail, signs and white lining to follow in Jan/Feb 2024.

November 2023

Treo Civil has been appointed by Council to undertake construction of the Old Mount Barker Road Black Spot Safety Upgrade between its intersections with Churchill Road and Flaxley Road.

Black Spot Programs are a vital part of the State's commitment to improving road safety and reducing road crashes on South Australian roads by directly targeting improvements to roads with proven crash history or high-risk locations.

Treo Civil will be mobilising to site the week commencing 20 November 2023 to commence construction works.

Early site works will include the removal of 5 trees which are located on the edge of the existing road seal and present a significant road safety hazard.

The safety upgrade also includes targeted guard fence, localised road widening, drainage upgrades, improved road and corner delineation, new signage, road markings and other targeted measures to improve road safety.

Construction works are expected to take around 5-6 weeks to complete, subject to weather.

The total project cost of around $680,000 is being 100% funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

Due to the constrained working environment, traffic management including reduced speed limits and lane closures will be in-place during the works.

Whilst access to local properties will be maintained, Council asks drivers to use alternative routes wherever possible (i.e. Flaxley Road/Churchill Road) until these safety works are complete.

Council apologises for any inconvenience in advance whilst these upgrade works are undertaken and asks all road users to be vigilant during construction.

July 2023

The revised design has been re-scoped to be within budget and minimise impacts on vegetation (total of 5 scattered trees proposed to be removed) by replacing proposed sections of road widening with new guardrail. One section of proposed road widening was removed from the project scope.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport has approved the amended scope and the deadline for the completion of construction works has been extended to 31 December 2023.

A formal application to Native Vegetation Council will now be submitted and the revised works tendered for construction shortly with works scheduled to be undertaken later in 2023.

June 2023

The project has been rescoped and re-engineers to reduce tree removals.   Requisite approvals are being sought.

Construction is now expected to go into 2023/24.

April 2023

Project design review underway to manage impacts on native vegetation.

January 2023

Design is underway with consulting engineers and ecologists.
