Road safety upgrade works will shortly be commencing along Flaxley Road in the vicinity of Mount Barker High School to provide a new pedestrian crossing refuge, bus bay, footpaths, improved lighting and ancillary works.

With Flaxley Road being under the jurisdiction of State Government, Council has been working with the Department of Planning, Transport & Infrastructure together with Mount Barker High School to bring this much needed upgrade to fruition. The $450,000 project is being jointly funded by both Council and State Government Blackspot funding.

Local contractor Metro Country & Civil (MCC) has been awarded the construction contract with works commencing in mid-May 2019 through to late July 2019.

Site establishment will commence 6 May 2019 with construction works week commencing 13 May.

Stage 1 will see works concentrate on road widening on Keith Stephenson car park side (no impact to bus services)

Stage 2 Works will concentrate on new bus-bay/footpath on school side (impacts to bus services)

All bus services will continue to service the school as normal although alternative drop-off / pick-up points will be necessary both within the school and along nearby Stephenson Street whilst the new bus bay is constructed. Please contact the school direct for further details.

Link SA buses to be diverted during Stage 2 works only as below:

-          2 bus services (Nairne & Kanmantoo) to be diverted from existing bus bay to drop off/pick up point inside school

-          3 bus services (Harrogate, Macclesfield & Echunga) to be diverted from existing bus bay to Stephenson Street

Dedicated traffic / pedestrian control will be in place during peak school periods (8:15am – 8:45am / 3:15pm – 3:45pm).

Dan Cregan MP, Member for Kavel,  has announced that Council's black spot funding application has been approved.

Background

With regard to improving access for pedestrians between the high school and the linear trail, Council has prepared concept designs for a pedestrian crossing between the school and the gravel carpark on the linear trail side of the Flaxley Road.  The design includes improved footpath works, a pedestrian refuge, widened road lanes, sealed bus drop off area adjacent the school frontage and improved drainage.

Council has submitted the concept design to the State Government for consideration for funding in financial year 2018/19 through the Blackspot road safety program.

If the funding application is successful, this will yield a terrific road safety improvement for pedestrians , buses and users of Flaxley Road alike.
