Enrol
To vote or nominate for council, you must be enrolled on the South Australian electoral roll.
If you're enrolled to vote in SA state elections, you'll automatically be enrolled to vote in council elections. A ballot pack will automatically be sent to your registered mailing address.
You can check and update your enrolment details online at www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/check-enrolment
There’s no need to enrol on the roll unless you want to enrol in a different capacity or at a different address.
Enrolment is required by the close of roll at 5pm Monday 4 January 2027.
Council Voters Roll - State Elector Requirement
From 1 January 2026, amendments to the Local Government (Elections) Act 1999 defined that a person must now be on the South Australian House of Assembly Roll to be eligible to enrol to vote in local government (council) elections.
This is a significant change for those previously eligible to vote as non-resident property owners, occupiers or business operators.
Individuals who are not enrolled on the South Australian House of Assembly Roll, e.g. whose principal place of residence is interstate are no longer eligible to vote in South Australian council elections, even if they own or occupy property or operate a business within the council area.
If you are not eligible for the body corporate or group, there may be another person who is eligible to be the designated person within the body corporate or group if they are on the State Electoral roll. Learn more at www.councilelections.sa.gov.au.
For further information on this matter, it is recommended you discuss this with Council – please direct any enquiries to council@mountbarker.sa.gov.au or telephone 8391 7200.
How to Enrol in a Different Capacity or Address
There are three types of enrolment forms, each tailored to a specific category of eligibility:
- Natural Person
You may be eligible to vote in the council area or ward where your property is located. This includes owners or occupiers of holiday houses, investment properties, and business premises.
Having a say as a property owner is important. Many council services affect the bills you pay and impact the condition of your property. This includes rates, footpaths, roads, and waste collection. - Body Corporate
You may be eligible to vote in a council or ward election if you own/occupy a business in a council area that is different to the one you live in.
Participating in council elections as a business owner is important, as councils make many decisions that may impact your business such as building approval, food inspection and footpath maintenance. - Group Owners or Occupiers
If you live in a property that is owned by more than one owner (for example, a group owner), or occupied by more than one occupier or tenant (for example, a group occupier), you may be entitled to vote if you have lodged an application form with Council for that property.
Detailed eligibility requirements are outlined on the back of the council’s enrolment application forms.
To vote in the 2027 Council Election, your completed and witnessed application must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 4 January 2027.
