Bushfire Safer Places

The CFS uses the Fire Danger Rating as an indicator of how dangerous a bushfire could be if it did occur. It is not a predictor of how likely a bushfire is to occur. It should be used as an early indicator to trigger your plans. To find out more about Fire Danger Ratings visit the CFS website.

The CFS have also identified places that can offer relative safety from a bushfire. They are divided into two categories:

  1. Bushfire Safer Place - Use if you need to relocate early. Suitable for use during forecast bad fire weather or during bushfire. May be subject to sparks, embers and smoke.
  2. Bushfire Last Resort Refuge - Use if your plan has failed. Not suitable for extended use and provides only limited protection during bushfire.

To find out more about bushfire safer places including a map that shows all the locations in South Australia visit the CFS website.

** PLEASE REMEMBER LAST RESORT REFUGES SHOULD ONLY BE CONSIDERED IF YOUR OWN PLAN (AND EVERYTHING ELSE) HAS FAILED. THEY ARE NOT SITES THAT YOU SHOULD PLAN TO RELOCATE TO!

Large Animal Pens

Large Animal Pens at Mount Barker Showgrounds

Large animal pens are located at the Mount Barker Showgrounds (Wellington Road side) so animals can be safely housed there when required.

These pens can be used on heightened fire danger days (Total Fire Ban days) and during emergency events.

Large animals include horses and other livestock can be located at site.

The pens are made from a composite of reclaimed wood and recycled plastic with steel support posts and are termite proof and will never rot. Because they are purpose built to hold animals, they’re also non-toxic, tasteless and odourless.

There is no booking system for use of the pens on these days. Users are expected to be self sufficient and use it at communities own risk.

Occupation of the site should be no longer than 24 hours on Total Fire Ban days or up to 48 hours after the declaration of an emergency being declared safe for residents to return.

All users must stay with their animals at all times and make sure their animals are properly restrained while using the site.

This project was funded through the State Emergency Relief Fund and the Cudlee Creek Bushfire Recovery Program.
