Roads

Build Roads

Council is responsible for maintaining a total road network of approximately 805km. This increases every year. This consists of approximately 351km of sealed roads, approximately 389km of formed and surfaced roads and approximately 65km of unformed roads.

Council’s budget includes a number of programs in relation to roads being:

  • Bus Stop Program
  • Kerb Renewal Program
  • Sealed Roads Resurfacing Program
  • Township Unsealed Road Sealing Program
  • Unsealed Road Resheeting Program
  • Unsealed Roads Patrol Grading Program

Council endeavours to complete the Programs within the indicated year, however the program can be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. If this occurs the affected segment will be scheduled in a future works program.

Some dust nuisance is inevitable from unsealed roads but Council aims to minimise dust by improving its road maintenance practises.  This includes improved grader operations, the use of high quality road making materials and in some cases the application of additives to reduce the abrasion of the road surface.  In the past, Council has used a recycled asphalt product to reduce dust and improve the road surface but this type of material is currently not available.

Council has no formal plans to seal unsealed roads or construct new unsealed roads at this point in time however, it is in the process of investigating an upgrade program for unsealed roads that will be subject to funding.

On 3 August 2020, Council adopted the Sealing Unsealed Roads Policy to give guidance to the decision to upgrade an unsealed road asset by applying a seal.
