Influenza

Mount Barker District Council provides an annual influenza program from late March through to December. The influenza vaccine is recommended for anyone 6 months of age and over to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with the flu.

Free annual funded Influenza vaccines are offered under the National Immunisation Program to all those in the following groups:

  • All medically at risk persons aged 6 months and older (please discuss with the Immunisation Nurse)
  • All pregnant women
  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons aged 6 months and older
  • All children 6 months to less than 5 years
  • All persons aged 65 years and older
  • People who are homeless

For persons who are not eligible for a free funded Influenza vaccine a fee influenza vaccine is provided for $26.

Influenza vaccine dose recommendations

One flu vaccine per year is routinely recommended for most people.

Children under 9 years of age who receive the flu vaccine for the first time are recommended to have two doses at least 4 weeks apart to improve their immune response. If a child received at least one flu vaccine in a previous year they only need one dose in the following years.
