Keeping the Fire Burning
This year's theme, "KEEP THE FIRE BURNING! BLAK, LOUD AND PROUD," celebrates the unyielding spirit of Indigenous communities. It invites everyone to stand together and amplify the voices that have long been silenced.
The fire symbolises the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite countless challenges. It represents a profound connection to the land, each other, and the rich traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Honouring this flame kindles pride and unity, renewing our commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing cultural heritage.
"Blak, Loud and Proud" is about celebrating Indigenous identity, empowering everyone to stand tall in their heritage and assert their place in the modern world. This theme calls for reclaiming narratives, amplifying voices, and committing to justice and equality. It invites all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society that fully values and respects Indigenous contributions.
The event featured a powerful Welcome to Country by Peramangk Elder Uncle Wally Richards followed by a cultural performance by Imbala Jarjum. Throughout the afternoon, music by Bec Gollan and Troy Rigney and their band entertained the crowd, while Eskatology's raps offered thought-provoking messages. Poets shared stories, and the Stand Strong mob showcased their culture. Children and adults alike enjoyed artistic activities facilitated by the Flaxley WOVEN team.
The inspiration behind this event was Peramangk woman Courtney Hunter Hebberman, who collaborated with members of the First Nations Community to bring this celebration to life. Funding from the Federal Government through the National Indigenous Australians Agency enabled this important community celebration.
