Keeping Water Catchments Clean
There are two broad categories of surface water resources within the district.
Creeks draining southwest into the Onkaparinga Catchment (including Echunga Creek, Hahndorf Creek, and Biggs Flat).
Streams and rivers draining east towards Lake Alexandrina into the River Murray Catchment (including the Bremer River and Angas River).
European settlement and urbanisation have changed the watercourses' physical, chemical, and biological states. Common causes include urban development, grazing, riparian vegetation clearance, invasive aquatic species, and woody weed infestations.
An ongoing long-term project for our biodiversity team is to remove woody weeds from the Mount Barker creek system to improve the watercourse, its biodiversity, and other environmental values. Native plants will be introduced to the riparian zone to enhance nutrient removal, stabilise the bank, regulate water temperature, and provide habitats and corridors for fauna.
