2025 Young Citizen of the Year - Deanna Wallis
What does this recognition mean to you personally?
“I am truly honored to have received this award in a community that means so much to my family.”
“This award is bigger than me though, there are so many amazing people and organisations who support me and my passions. I couldn't do it without them”
How have your personal experiences shaped your dedication to mental health advocacy and supporting others in the community?
“My personal experiences have played a huge role in shaping my dedication. Growing up, I faced challenges with bullying, anxiety, and feeling like the odd one out. On top of that, dealing with endometriosis and the physical toll it took on my body only added to the struggles. Going through these experiences firsthand made me realise how isolating it can feel when you don’t have the right support or understanding.”
“As an educator working with children, I’ve seen how early experiences shape confidence, resilience, and self-worth. This has fuelled my passion for creating spaces where young people feel seen, heard, and valued.”
“Whether it’s through my talks, or advocacy work, I want to help others recognise their unique strengths and understand that they are never alone in their struggles.”
What do you think is the most important lesson you’ve learned through your volunteer work and community engagement?
“The most important lesson I’ve learned is that small acts of kindness and understanding can make a world of difference. Whether it’s listening to someone’s story, advocating for change, or simply offering reassurance, every action matters.”
Can you share a memorable moment from one of these events that really made you feel like you were making a difference?
“Before attending one of our Embrace Kids excursions, a young girl had been bullied and was feeling really down about herself. But after joining the excursion, she left feeling so much better, and that means the world to me.”
“I've had so many kids come up to me, thanking me, hugging me, and even crying in my arms, reminding me of the impact this work has. I feel incredibly grateful to collaborate with so many amazing people and organisations to make these events possible.”
