Shaping the heart of Mount Barker
Bulk earthworks will commence in August 2026, following Development Approval from the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) and the appointment of local contractor Diverse Civil through a competitive tender process. These works will prepare the site for the delivery of the new public realm.
Council will also shortly call tenders for the landscaping component of the project, with those works scheduled to follow later this year.
The project is fully funded through Council's approved Annual Business Plan, including a $2 million State Government grant, and is being delivered in partnership with Burke Urban as part of the endorsed City Centre Masterplan.
Subject to weather conditions, the bulk earthworks are expected to be completed by late September or early October, with the Town Square anticipated to be completed in the first half of 2027.
What to expect during construction
- Works will generally occur Monday to Friday, 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, with occasional Saturday morning works if required.
- No works will be undertaken on Sundays or public holidays.
- All surrounding roads are expected to remain open throughout construction.
- Construction vehicles will access the site via Stephen Street.
- During the works Stephen Street will be closed for pedestrians and temporary footpath diversions near the Morphett Street and Hutchinson Street corner may be implemented from time to time for safety reasons.
We ask motorists and pedestrians to follow any temporary traffic management and footpath detours to help keep everyone safe.
This marks an exciting milestone in creating our new town square and shared-use laneway in the heart of Mount Barker.
