New preschool and primary school site announced
16 July 2026
A new preschool and primary school is a step closer, with Minister for Education, Training and Skills Lucy Hood MP today announcing the site for the $61.1 million project.
A 5.5-hectare parcel of land in Mount Barker’s south-east, off Heysen Boulevard and Aston Parade, has been selected following extensive site assessments.
The new primary school will cater for 350 students from Reception to Year 6, while the co-located preschool will provide an additional 100 places for local families.
Council acknowledges, and very much appreciates, the Minister for Education, Training and Skills Lucy Hood MP's announcement yesterday that a new preschool and primary school will be built in Aston Hills.
This is a positive outcome for education infrastructure in Mount Barker - a key priority for the region.
The community needs additional public education facilities in Mount Barker; particularly in the growth area where lots of young families live and whose children currently can't easily walk or ride to school.
The location of the new pre-school and primary school was chosen by the South Australian Government and Council was not consulted on this site.
We recognise this state government decision will have a significant impact on Wok the Duck - a much-loved local family restaurant.
We support the owners' right to advocate for their business and acknowledge the important contribution, and connection, they have with the community.
We look forward to continuing constructive engagement with the state government to ensure this matter is considered from a whole-of-government perspective and takes the needs of the local community - including affected landowners and Wok the Duck - into account.
