Mayor David Leach said the public Wi-Fi service, which launched this week, was a first for the Adelaide Hills region.
“This is the first Wi-Fi service installed in a large, outdoor public space that’s free and unlimited for locals, visitors and workers to use at any time of the day or night,” the Mayor said.
“Pop Up Park regularly hosts events and this new Wi-Fi service will activate the space even further, establishing it as a central and accessible community hub.
“By providing more services, and giving people more reasons to come to the heart of town, we’re creating an area with a strong sense of place in preparation for the new town square which will be built in coming years.”
Business Mount Barker was the primary sponsor of the Wi-Fi project and contributed $6,000 towards the new community service which has also been partly funded by council.
Business Mount Barker Chair James Sexton said the project was ‘another great example’ of the local business group successfully partnering with council to deliver initiatives in the centre of Mount Barker.
“The launch of this Wi-Fi service is just the start of Business Mount Barker’s role in helping activate Pop Up Park and we’re keen to work with council on an activation program in 2025 where we can help fund and support events,” Mr Sexton said.
“It’s been identified that Mount Barker needs more spaces in the centre of town for young people to meet safely, and visibly, and Pop Up Park will provide more opportunities for them to do that now it’s connected to fast and free Wi-Fi.
“The launch of this service will also enhance the future delivery of council-run events which often rely on Wi-Fi to support sound and ticketing systems as well as audio equipment.”
Instructions on accessing the free Wi-Fi service are displayed on picnic tables in Pop Up Park.
Council will gauge the success of the Pop Up Park Wi-Fi project to assess the feasibility of delivering similar services across the district.
Pop Up Park is located on Morphett Street in Mount Barker.
