Working towards Hahndorf parking solutions
A strategic land purchase opportunity at 108 Mount Barker Road, Hahndorf was presented to Council in March 2024 and following negotiations, the property was purchased by Council for $2.3 million.
The land is zoned Township Main Street and has potential to be redeveloped for a number of uses including retail and commercial.
Preliminary design investigations undertaken by Council staff have indicated that a potential car parking yield of between 88-95 car parks is possible on this property.
Prior to any redevelopment of the site Council would undertake master planning and importantly seek community input.
Council has for a number of years also been engaged in early discussions with the State Government and the Adelaide Hills Council regarding the potential development of a Park and Ride facility at Verdun. Such a facility would be linked to Hahndorf and could greatly assist car parking supply and demand issues.
Council will look at the site at 108 Mount Barker Road, alongside other opportunities such as a Park and Ride at Verdun, to increase parking supply for Hahndorf Main Street.
A Park and Ride facility at Verdun due to its proximity to the freeway and existing bus routes is another option being considered.
There is the potential to service a Park and Ride with a shuttle bus between Hahndorf and the surrounding locality and would have the ability to accommodate larger vehicles such as RV’s and caravans within a purpose designed and unconstrained site.
Council staff are undertaking further due diligence and discussions to prioritise this with the State Government and progress concepts to enable further consideration.
There is not one solution that will remedy car parking issues in Hahndorf but rather a series of interventions implemented by Council, the Hahndorf Business and Tourism Association, private property owners, the State Government and businesses.
Hahndorf is one of the State’s most important tourism assets contributing significant economic returns. Council’s role is to continue to bring all parties together and advocate for solutions to address community concern and in support of the continued tourism and economic success experienced by Hahndorf.
