Advocating for improved connectivity in northern townships
Following extensive community consultation and meetings with Telstra and NBN Co., the council endorsed digital connectivity plans at their November meeting, aimed at addressing mobile black spots in these townships. These plans align with actions identified in the Harrogate & Brukunga Township Plan and the Kanmantoo Township Plan.
Mount Barker District Council Mayor David Leach emphasised that poor connectivity has long been an issue in these areas, and the need for enhanced services was particularly evident during the Cudlee Creek bushfire of 2019-2020.
“Council is now focused on leveraging the Australian Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP), which has delivered over 1,400 mobile base stations across regional Australia,” Mayor Leach said.
Round eight of the program offers $55 million in funding to enhance mobile coverage in areas prone to natural disasters, including bushfire-affected regions.
While the council cannot apply directly to the MBSP, it has registered these blackspot areas on the program’s noticeboard to alert mobile network providers of the community's needs. The noticeboard serves as a key tool for providers to identify potential projects and seek funding through the MBSP.
“Engagement with Telstra and NBN Co. is ongoing. Council is advocating strongly for residents and working towards funding and coverage improvements,” Mayor Leach said.
“Although the provision of digital infrastructure falls under federal and private sector responsibility, Council’s role is to ensure the needs of its community are addressed through these channels.
“Strengthening digital connectivity in the district is a critical step towards enhancing economic resilience and improving the community's access to essential services. Council will continue to work with industry partners to ensure blackspot areas are prioritised for future funding opportunities.”
