Consultation on long-awaited Meadows intersection upgrade
The intersection upgrade of Mawson, Battunga and Nottage Roads has been a longstanding priority for the Meadows community, first identified in the 2019 Meadows Township Plan and reaffirmed in Council’s recently endorsed Integrated Transport Plan.
The intersection upgrade is seen as vital to enhancing safety, reducing congestion, and supporting continued growth in the area.
“The start of consultation on the concept plan for the Mawson Road, Battunga Road and Nottage Road intersection upgrade is great news and something that both the Council and the community have been advocating for a long time,” Mayor David Leach said.
“The Meadows intersection has become increasingly congested, reflecting the town’s growth as a thoroughfare to the Fleurieu Peninsula and its expanding residential population.”
The intersection currently experiences a high volume of private and commercial vehicle movements, particularly between Battunga Road and Mawson Road. Peak times regularly see traffic queues forming on multiple legs of the intersection, contributing to safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), which manages Mawson and Battunga Roads, has completed preliminary investigations and identified a single-lane roundabout as the preferred design solution. The upgraded intersection would improve vehicle safety, facilitate better freight movement, and accommodate turning requirements for heavy vehicles.
Council recently completed a $1.2 million upgrade of Nottage Road and has proposed a further $600,000 towards streetscape enhancements, including new amenity improvements following the undergrounding of power lines completed under a previous Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC) project.
“We welcome the South Australian Government’s support in completing the intersection improvements,” Mayor Leach said.
“This upgrade will significantly improve road safety and connectivity in the region, marking a major milestone in Mount Barker’s infrastructure development.”
Community consultation is now open and will run until Friday 13 June 2025. Two drop-in sessions will be held at the Meadows Memorial Hall, giving residents and business owners a chance to view plans and share their feedback:
- Thursday 22 May, 4:00pm–6:00pm
- Saturday 24 May, 12:30pm–2:30pm
Further information, including draft designs and consultation details, can be found on the DIT website under the Mawson Road, Battunga Road and Nottage Road Intersection Upgrade, Meadows project page: www.dit.sa.gov.au/meadowsPRS.
While the project is still in the early design stages, DIT anticipates that major works will commence in the second half of 2026. Council staff will remain actively involved throughout the process, ensuring the community’s voice continues to shape the final outcome.
“Council has been advocating for this upgrade for many years,” Mayor Leach said.
“We’re pleased to see progress and look forward to seeing it deliver real benefits for Meadows and the broader district.”
