Grand opening for Summit Aquatic and Leisure in Mount Barker
The project has been co-funded by the Australian Government through the Community Development Grant scheme ($15 million) and the Commonwealth Accessible Australia initiative, Government of South Australia’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program ($7.3 million) and Mount Barker District Council.
The $52 million centre was officially opened by the Honourable Emily Bourke MLC, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, by launching a 50-metre relay race featuring Mount Barker Swimming Club members aged between seven and twelve years old.
Summit Aquatic and Leisure is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the Mount Barker District Council and a landmark investment in health, wellbeing, and community connection.
The centre features a 25-metre indoor pool, a dedicated learn-to-swim pool, warm water program pool, splash play area, gym and group fitness spaces, as well as community meeting rooms and a café.
Designed with sustainability at its core, the facility incorporates rooftop solar, water reuse systems, and all-electric heat pumps. This makes it one of the most environmentally advanced aquatic centres in regional Australia.
All pools include accessibility ramps, wide concourses and multiple disabled change areas.
As part of the Accessible Australia initiative, there is also a designated Changing Places changeroom located in the warm water therapy pool hall.
This changeroom offers the highest level of accessibility, giving people with disability and complex needs access to safe, suitable, and specialised bathroom facilities in their community.
The Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre is now open to the public, with memberships already exceeding expectations and strong demand for programs and classes.
Rebekha Sharkie MP
Federal Member for Mayo
“This is such an exciting day, and a day that many of us have been very much looking forward to.
I thank and acknowledge the Federal Government for the $15 million commitment to our new pool. This commitment was made more than six years ago and it's rewarding to now see the centre being enjoyed by so many people.
Both from a recreational and health perspective, this pool is an incredibly significant asset to our community.
This is a multi-use facility. There's a fitness area, hydrotherapy pool, a fun park for children and a lap pool for general swimming. I look forward to seeing you all in lane one!
This is a facility that I hope will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
The Hon Emily Bourke MLC
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing

“A purpose-built centre, equipped with modern and inclusive features, enables South Australians of all ages and abilities to come together and lead healthy and active lives.”
“This partnership continues to transform the precinct and has delivered a regional aquatic centre for current and future generations.”
The Hon Nat Cook MP
Minister for Human Services
“We’re working with councils to deliver more Changing Places across SA – supporting the 2025–2029 State Disability Inclusion Plan’s commitment to accessible public spaces for all.”
“Disability is defined by the barriers to inclusion and participation, not by the person.”
“Inclusive facilities like this strengthen communities and help more people connect with programs, activities and social opportunities.”
Mayor David Leach
Mount Barker District Council
“Summit Aquatic and Leisure is the largest project our Council has ever delivered, and one we’re incredibly proud of. This is a place for everyone—families, seniors, athletes, and people just looking to stay active or connect with others. With our population growing rapidly, it will be a cornerstone of community life for decades to come.”
“This facility has been designed with our growing community in mind, offering something for everyone - from children learning to swim, to seniors enjoying warm water therapy, to families spending time together. It’s a game-changer for the region.”
“We want every member of our community to feel they can enjoy this centre. The Changing Places facility ensures people with disability and their families can access the warm water therapy pool and the wider precinct with dignity and confidence.”
