Hahndorf Academy transformed for youth-led creative takeover
Low Key a Haus Party, taking place on 10 April from 7pm to 10pm, will feature live music, DJs, art, gaming, workshops and quiet spaces, all designed by young people for young people.
The event has been developed by a steering group of local young people, supported by Mount Barker District Council staff and funded through a Department of Human Services Youth Week grant.
The council’s Community Development Officer – Children and Youth, Shannon Swart, said the event places young people at the centre of planning and delivery.
“Young people have led the design of this event from the outset, shaping both the program and the way the space will be used,” Ms Swart said.
The program builds on last year’s Street Beats event, with the 2026 event expanding across the full Hahndorf Academy site. Each room within the gallery will host a different activity on the night.
Ms Swart said the event responds to what young people have said they want from local programs.
“We consistently hear that young people are looking for safe, welcoming spaces where they can spend time with friends and try different activities,” she said.
Free food and shuttle bus services from Mount Barker, Nairne and Meadows will be available to improve access for young people across the district.
The event is designed for young people in Years 7 to 12 and aims to support connection, creativity and participation.
In addition to the main event, the council will deliver further Youth Week initiatives.
A three-day barista course, delivered in partnership with HITsa Training and Employment, will provide young people aged 16 to 25 with practical hospitality skills, followed by a coffee showcase for invited guests to celebrate completing their training.
Mount Barker District Council is also partnering with Adelaide Hills Council to host a screening of the documentary Future Council at Wallis Cinema, Mount Barker. The film explores how young people can be involved in civic decision-making and links to the council’s upcoming Youth Voice initiative.
“These programs are about providing opportunities for young people to build skills, connect with others and have a say in their community,” Ms Swart said.
