Cats

Cats are a popular choice of companion pet for people in our district. Council supports responsible pet ownership.

All cat owners in South Australia are required to microchip and desex their cats. Mount Barker District Council has also established a by-law to help reduce the impact cats have on our environment.

Rules include compulsory registration; number of cats allowable on a property and cat confinement. View the Cats By-Law here.

These requirements help to reduce feral cat populations, reduce harm to wildlife, reduce disease transmission and make it easier to reunite lost cats with their people. Desexing also has welfare benefits for the desexed animal such as being less aggressive and less prone to urine and scent marking behaviour.

For more information about selecting a suitable cat as a pet, fact sheets, desexing and microchipping visit the Dog and Cat Board website.
