What is the Mount Barker Youth Advisory Committee?

The Mount Barker Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) provides a genuine opportunity for young people to have their voices heard and play an active role in shaping the future of the Mount Barker District. Members will contribute ideas, provide advice and help inform Council decisions, projects, events and public spaces that impact children and young people.

Working together, members will identify priorities, contribute to meaningful Council projects and ensure young people's perspectives are represented in local decision-making.

The YAC isn't just another committee; it's an opportunity to create something that has never existed before.

As a founding member, you won't simply join an existing committee, you'll help build it.

Together, you'll shape how the committee works, what it stands for, how it engages with Council and the community, and the impact it has for young people across the district. Rather than stepping into a pre-defined structure, you'll work alongside other young people to create one that reflects your ideas, your priorities and your vision for the future.

Supported by Council staff, the YAC will be youth-led, collaborative and focused on creating positive outcomes for children, young people and the wider community.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applications are open to young people who:

• Are aged 12–25 years.
• Live, work, study or have a strong connection to the Mount Barker District.
• Are passionate about making a positive difference in their community.
• Can commit to attending regular meetings and participating in projects throughout the year.
• Are respectful of others and willing to work as part of a team.

No previous leadership, committee or volunteering experience is required—we're looking for a diverse range of young people with different experiences, interests and ideas.

Build it from the ground up

As an inaugural member, you won't be joining an existing committee, you'll be creating it.

Together, you'll decide:

• What your committee stands for by creating its purpose, values, and goals.
• How it operates, including how meetings run and how decisions are made.
• When and where you meet, in a way that works for the group.
• What projects and issues you want to focus on, alongside Council priorities.
• How you engage with other young people to make sure their voices are heard.
• What kind of legacy you want to leave for future Youth Advisory Committee members.

Council will provide guidance, mentoring and support, but the committee's identity, culture and direction will be shaped by you.
