Since 1 July 2018, one central database (DACO) was introduced to capture dog and cat registrations, desexing and microchip details in South Australia.
Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) has replaced the 68 individual council registers and assists councils, shelters and the general public in reuniting lost pets with their owners.
The following requirements are mandatory for all dog and cat owners, breeders in South Australia:
- All registrations and renewals are completed online via DACO every year
- Micro-chipping of dogs and cats is compulsory
- De-sexing is compulsory for all dogs and cats born after 1 July 2018
- Anyone who breeds or sells a dog or cat must register with the Dog and Cat Management Board as a breeder
From the 1st July 2020, Council’s Cat By-law requires cat owners to register their cat with Dogs and Cats Online (DACO).

Before you start your registration, make sure you have your cat or dog’s desexing certificate and microchip details on hand as substantial registration rebates apply for dogs and cats that are microchipped AND desexed.

Dog and cat registrations are due every year between 1 July and 31 August. Registrations are due within this time regardless of when you initially registered your pet.
You will receive your registration renewal in July each year via email, post or SMS. The contact you receive depends on your preferred contact method you noted in your initial registration with DACO.
