Council Endorses Concept Design for Mount Barker Town Square
The Town Square will become the central community gathering place in the city centre, providing spaces for everyday use, cultural expression, and events of varying sizes, from markets to performances.
Mount Barker Mayor, David Leach, said the Town Square will play a vital role as a central place for connection, culture, and community.
“The Town Square has been shaped by extensive feedback from our Community Reference Group, council staff, and stakeholders,” Mayor Leach said.
“This design embodies the principles of gathering, connecting, integrating with its surroundings, celebrating identity, and responding to climate challenges. It is a space for everyone, and one that will grow with the community.”
In October 2024, the council endorsed the revised master plan for the site and secured $2 million in funding from the State Government to help deliver the Town Square.
Since then, design development has been led by JPE Design Studio with guidance from the council and their development partner – Burke Urban Investments, and the project’s Community Reference Group.
Feedback has been incorporated into the revised concept design, including the need for flexible event spaces to support small and medium events, improved connections to surrounding streets, pedestrian-friendly design, public art, and features that reflect Mount Barker’s distinct character.
Prior to going to the September Council meeting for endorsement, the draft design was reviewed by the Community Reference Group at a workshop in August.
The design fits within the council’s current cost expectations and will now move to the detailed design stage. This next stage will refine infrastructure, landscaping, play features, safety, and accessibility before construction begins.
“This project is about more than buildings and open space,” Mayor Leach said.
“It is about creating a civic heart for Mount Barker that reflects the identity of our community and supports wellbeing, connection, and growth into the future.”
Stage 1A of the City Centre Project, including the Town Square, is expected to begin construction in 2026.
