A more flexible waste management system
Responding to community feedback and in alignment with the council’s Waste to Resources Management Plan, residents will now have the option to request additional individual kerbside bins, offering greater flexibility and efficiency in waste management.
Previously, residents were required to apply for and receive a full set of additional bins based on the entitlements of their property type.
Each property, whether residential, commercial, or rural, will continue to receive a base set of bins as per their rating category. These base sets are billed through rates notices as an annual waste charge.
The new system will allow residents to request individual additional bins tailored to their specific needs.
Mount Barker Mayor, David Leach said: “This change not only reflects the council’s commitment to sustainability and resource management but also addresses the evolving needs of the community.”
“By offering greater flexibility in waste management options, the council aims to empower residents to make more sustainable choices while reducing unnecessary waste.”
Under the revised policy additional blue bins for general waste will be charged at 50 per cent of the base annual waste charge. Additional yellow bins for recycling and green bins for green waste will each be charged at 25 per cent of the base annual waste charge.
Blue and yellow bins will continue to be supplied through council’s waste contract at council’s cost, and additional green bins will continue to be supplied at the landowners cost.
A roll back of bins from residents who already have an additional full set of bins, but wish to swap to the new system of individual bins, will occur in a staged process from October 2024 to March 2025, with fees being adjusted accordingly on a pro rata basis.
“The Mount Barker District Council is dedicated to continuously improving its services to better serve the needs of its residents and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future,” Mayor Leach said.
