Hahndorf township gets lower speed limit
For a number of years members of the Hahndorf community have been seeking lower speed limits in the urban areas of the township. In August 2021, Mount Barker District Council endorsed the implementation of a 40 km/h township area speed limit for Hahndorf to improve safety for all road users. That endorsement gave council officers confidence to work with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to prepare the necessary assessments and reports to introduce this important road safety improvement.
Mount Barker Mayor, David Leach said that the council has “from time to time received compelling requests from community to lower speed limits in Hahndorf.”
“This is a great win by the Hahndorf community, they have advocated and the outcome they asked for has been delivered.”
“Hahndorf is a popular tourist precinct attracting a significant number of visitors, consequently, the township experiences heavy pedestrian traffic, increased parking demand and a generally bustling atmosphere,” Mayor Leach said.
“Considering the narrow streets in some areas it is appropriate to extend the successful implementation of a 40km/h speed limit along the main street by DIT to now cover the developed urban region of the town.”
Speed limits are determined by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport considering factors such as road function, adjacent roadside development and traffic characteristics. This speed limit reduction is separate to DIT’s Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Project.
The council has completed installation of the required signage and the 40km/h is now in place.
