Laratinga Wetlands: A thriving ecosystem and visitor destination
Over the years, it has evolved into a vital habitat for local flora and fauna, serving as a cherished ecological and recreational asset for the community.
Located off Bald Hills Road in Mount Barker, the 12 hectares of lagoons and ponds is a haven for local wildlife and residents alike with several cycling, walking and cultural trails and boardwalks.
Recent surveys show a high bird richness within the wetland precinct, including rare and vulnerable species like Australian Crake, Buff-Banded Rail, and Pink-Eared Ducks.
“The reserves provide habitat for local flora and fauna and have become an important refuge in an increasingly urban environment. We are lucky and appreciative to have this significant bird refuge so close to Mount Barker and Adelaide,” Mayor Leach said.
Since September 2023 a staggering 125,000 people have visited this magnificent place.
“We are pleased as punch that everyone enjoys the Laratinga Wetlands as much as the many species of birds, frogs and other creatures that make the wetlands their home,” Environmental Project Officer, Emma said.
Another attraction of the wetlands is the cultural precinct, which acknowledges and celebrates the Peramangk history of our region with a number of significant art works.
The legend of Tjilbruke by renowned Aboriginal artist Robert Wuldi is just one of the impressive sculptures adorning the cultural part of Laratinga Wetlands.
“This sculpture is very special to me,” Robert said.
“It represents the travels of Tjilbruke. He was a strong man, a mighty man, and a man of the dreaming that journeyed from my country Ngarrindjeri through other Aboriginal nations including Mount Barker.”
Made from marble, the sculpture represents a Kuarna Shield with elements of fire (Peramangk), three levels of water (river, lake and ocean) representing Ngarrindjeri and an ibis footprint representing Kaurna, which also symbolises Tjilbruke, who turned into an ibis as part of his journey.
